Overview

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process is widely used for joining similar and dissimilar metals due to its several advantages in terms of sound welds. However, the heat input and speed of the process remain big challenges. The most important application for TIG welding is pipe welding. It is used in many industries, such as aviation and aerospace, and sheet metal industries when welding particularly thin materials and special materials such as titanium. This course focuses on the basics of the TIG welding process along with inspection and troubleshooting.

Eligibility

  • I.T.I. Welders and Welding Operators, Diploma Students
  • Pre-requisites: Arc welding experience or candidates conversant with Arc Welding

Objective

  • Understand GTAW welding fundamentals and its processes
  • Identify the major parts of the machine and the different equipment
  • Set up and shut down the GTAW equipment and know how to maintain the machine
  • Know and use the proper safety procedures and equipment in GTAW
  • Learn the different shielding gases and the common types of GTAW electrodes, and know the differences between them
  • Make use of the most common edge preparations and the different weld joint designs
  • Know how to weld mild steel and stainless on square groove butt, lap, T, edge, and corner joints in different positions
  • Identify problems and weld defects and know how to correct them

  • Introduction to GTAW welding – applications and principles
  • Power sources for the GTAW process
  • Component parts of a TIG machine
  • Setting up of a TIG welding workstation
  • Correct use of torch and filler rod angles
  • Edge preparation methods for welding
  • Shielding gases for the GTAW process
  • Parameter settings (adjustments of current and voltage control)
  • Correct set-up and tacking procedures
  • Types of tungsten electrodes & preparation techniques
  • To weld mild steel and stainless on square groove butt, lap, T, edge, and corner joints in different positions
  • Identify problems and weld defects and know how to correct them
  • Personal safety and safety in the use of the equipment

Outcomes

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • Appreciate the importance of safe working procedures for welding
  • Be aware of the hazards associated with the GTAW process
  • Know the correct welding techniques – theoretical fundamentals of the TIG process, which are then reinforced during the practical sessions
  • Improve skill levels – the initial practical focuses on the correct set-up of a TIG welding set and how to fault-find, whilst the second session allows operators the opportunity to practice techniques
  • Recognise, appreciate their causes, and rectify welding defects
  • Adjust voltage and current settings to suit the work to be undertaken

  • Post-test assessment score: 70% minimum
