Overview

This hands-on training program introduces manufacturing professionals to Computer Vision programming using Python. Participants will develop practical applications to detect objects, track their movements, and identify products using visual characteristics. Through industrial video datasets and guided programming, participants will build a conveyor-based monitoring application integrating object detection, tracking, identification and automated product counting.

Course Objectives

  • To understand Computer Vision concepts and applications in manufacturing automation.
  • Implement object tracking to monitor movement and assign unique tracking IDs.
  • Integrate object identification, classification and counting into an industrial monitoring application.
  • To Develop Python programs for detecting industrial objects using image and video processing.

Requirements

  • Laptop (intel i3 or above and equivalent, min. 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 11) with webcam, internet connection, Python (latest) and required libraries, Visual Studio Code

Pre-requisites

  • Participants must have basic programming knowledge

Course Content

Module 1: Computer Vision Fundamentals
  • Industrial applications, image and video processing, camera frames, Python and OpenCV fundamentals.
  • Hands-on: Read and display industrial images and videos; draw bounding boxes and labels.
Module 2: Object Detection
  • Detection concepts, pretrained AI models, bounding boxes, confidence scores and multiple-object detection.
  • Hands-on: Detect products on a conveyor using a pretrained model.
Module 3: Object Tracking
  • Tracking across video frames, object movement, unique tracking IDs and simple tracking algorithms.
  • Hands-on: Track multiple moving products and display their individual tracking IDs.
Module 4: Object Identification
  • Product classification, colour/shape-based identification, QR-code identification and visual recognition limitations.
  • Hands-on: Identify product variants and associate identification results with tracked objects.
Module 5: Integrated Manufacturing Application
  • Detection, tracking, identification, virtual counting line, event logging and visualization.
  • Hands-on: Develop a conveyor-based product monitoring system with automatic counting.
Module 6: Testing and Evaluation
  • Detection accuracy, missed objects, duplicate counts, environmental limitations and industrial implementation considerations.
  • Hands-on: Test the application using different sample videos and review results.

Outcomes

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • Develop Python-based Computer Vision applications for processing industrial images and videos.
  • Implement object detection and display identified objects using bounding boxes.
  • Track multiple moving objects with unique IDs and identify product variants.
  • Build an integrated manufacturing application for automated product monitoring and counting

  • Post-test assessment score – 70% Min
